Celebrating its 20th Anniversary in 2007, P.O.V. (”point of view”) is PBS’s award-winning showcase for independent nonfiction films. When P.O.V. emerged in PBS in 1988 with AMERICAN TONGUES, the “Big Three” networks (ABC, CBS and NBC) dominated television and cable was in its infancy. Public television was the only place where independent work had a shot at a national broadcast. Over the years, P.O.V. has showcased great works including those from Arthur Dong to Deborah Hoffman. What made (and still makes) the series so powerful is its commitment to finding and presenting the works off filmmakers who push the boundaries of the documentary genre and tackle contemporary issues with tenacity and passion. Each year, P.O.V. culls from upwards of 1,000 submissions 14-16 programs to premiere during its season, which runs June through October. How do films get selected? What makes a documentary a P.O.V. film? Find out what it takes to get your film on
